<br>
No, it's not because I was out all night drinking. (I really wasn't!) It's not because the bed was too short or because the sheets just don't know how to stay on the mattress. It's not because I have much to do before I go back to work on Monday. I'm numb not because I have logged more walking miles this week or lugged my Discovery tote around for several days.<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg81q-MvU6oMw-4HI83MHg2pvzYviyUVLzgh3GxAMgIxYAgJ8sOz9Ddfr4VYmHpa0CpYRkN6s_28schl9iw_2VXL03mblBOC2RPbBCPUnM5TBVqZ-ajwnaCkX-3IOpmWBGH_5zH1Y1J0sK9/s640/blogger-image-530232554.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg81q-MvU6oMw-4HI83MHg2pvzYviyUVLzgh3GxAMgIxYAgJ8sOz9Ddfr4VYmHpa0CpYRkN6s_28schl9iw_2VXL03mblBOC2RPbBCPUnM5TBVqZ-ajwnaCkX-3IOpmWBGH_5zH1Y1J0sK9/s640/blogger-image-530232554.jpg"></a></div>My brain is buzzing from all of the mental pictures that are popping around inside like atoms in a reactor. I try to focus on one idea and four more come screaming through the door.<br>
<br>
It's Thursday, the last full day of DENSI2015 in Washington, DC. I've met so many awesome people! I'm around a large group of people and have met first-timers walk around and own DENSI as well as the veteran attendees. I've seen some of the quietest empower themselves with an awesome, booming digital voice online. I've seen collaborative note-taking spaces remain sparse because all the fingers of participants were too busy trying new things, using multiple devices to capture or voices were too busy connecting shared ideas into new realities. <br>
<br>
How can this week have gone by so quickly? I will endeavor to focus not on the impending feelings of separation and loss tomorrow, but instead on my continued ADD nightmare. I already have so much to capture and yet I'm going to sit through another day of being flooded by ideas and future realities that will impact students back home.<br>
<br>
I'm waking up numb. But it's my own fault. I bought a ticket for the lotto that only has one ball, DENSI2015, and I won. Now how will I ever spend all of this experience?<br>

Seeing the archeological digs, the artifacts, the buildings, glass blower and hearing the stories was great! ...for me. ;) Road-weary kids liked it, but to a much-lesser degree. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPwMDaIr_nbOjsgzO-sttyScpLEWXM-XGJvXCWBTg29BY0RdzCfKaENmnXNNoaKAccDiuAUd4GqmxrYaruNKc6Yv_413M0Tn3ncul5hAoYcVswhB0RUJA0xPxIKHrYwvspmreHdHGotg-n/s640/blogger-image--439850059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPwMDaIr_nbOjsgzO-sttyScpLEWXM-XGJvXCWBTg29BY0RdzCfKaENmnXNNoaKAccDiuAUd4GqmxrYaruNKc6Yv_413M0Tn3ncul5hAoYcVswhB0RUJA0xPxIKHrYwvspmreHdHGotg-n/s640/blogger-image--439850059.jpg"></a></div><div><br></div><div>We went from there to Williamsburg. My memories and some tourist websites said we could spend part of a day walking around for free. After walking into town from public parking, we soon found that about everything required a pass or ticket. I would suggest that it is a wasted trip if trying to freebie it. We got cheap tickets and saw metal worker, tins moth, leather worker, cabinet maker and more. The group enthusiasm increased as we saw more cool things. Tired and hungry, we finished our tour and returned to the hotel. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgktZP6ZdbNwdbVhav1wSgWKTnXot4RBliPGeCItsVh4WbLErxLDasKt7i-A31W3pJyboy4jEPKMpbK-ie_keDWHsM4OrPqytTSuu3QA17hGVEUJf1ZiAeXgZ1malD1p1Ii4l-WM-XeHaqw/s640/blogger-image--531458392.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgktZP6ZdbNwdbVhav1wSgWKTnXot4RBliPGeCItsVh4WbLErxLDasKt7i-A31W3pJyboy4jEPKMpbK-ie_keDWHsM4OrPqytTSuu3QA17hGVEUJf1ZiAeXgZ1malD1p1Ii4l-WM-XeHaqw/s640/blogger-image--531458392.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-qGBpomeLYRoZOtKQ_MT4IiXQb9uxr55HeCxkdWIoLrsLkUpJZEZFwe9PINMjFnnqGHSq3eA37OrEHJi_YVczhPWub6PSQQXPFeWAqGJcktHLYC3NiWa1Buhs58u0fpv8eovmf7LotLQa/s640/blogger-image-2117273969.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-qGBpomeLYRoZOtKQ_MT4IiXQb9uxr55HeCxkdWIoLrsLkUpJZEZFwe9PINMjFnnqGHSq3eA37OrEHJi_YVczhPWub6PSQQXPFeWAqGJcktHLYC3NiWa1Buhs58u0fpv8eovmf7LotLQa/s640/blogger-image-2117273969.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>In what became a highlight of the trip, we cleaned up, put on 'good clothes' and went to Maurizio's Italian Restaurant. Ranger Rick said that there have been more bears in the park this year and "they can smell food inside the package over a mile away."<br />
<br />
One of our planned destinations was Grotto Falls. It was a great, short hike. The worst part really was just finding a place to park on the narrow, parking-challenged motor tour road. There were a lot of friendly people on the trail and many opportunities to take photos of the mountain, streams and waterfalls. Grotto falls actually allows you to get being the waterfall for your photos. It was pretty crowded down there, but worth the hike.<br />
<br />
My crew took some time back at camp to relax and then we went off for a drive up to Clingman's Dome. It is the 3rd highest peak east of the Mississippi and provided substantial opportunities for fantastic views. We, and about 50 close friends, stayed for the sunset over the Appalachians. We knew it was going to get colder, but the upper 40 degrees in the wind made for very numb fingers as the sun went down.<br />

Cinderella wanted to go to Subzero Ice Cream before we ever left Texas. The staff wasn't the most friendly, but the novelty of having your cream and toppings quick-frozen with nitrogen was a unique experience.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We finally made it to the Smoky Mountain National Park, after a very interesting ride through Gatlinburg, and were able to get the wet tent put up and collapse inside after a quick bite to eat. The tent had plenty of room for the beds and kids shared a movie off an iPad as the drifted off to sleep in a much cooler environment.</div>

<br />
Last Friday found us arriving at Corinth Recreational Area near Double Spring, Alabama. It's a small place in the northwest part of the state, but was a nice first place to camp with this crew. The tent went up quickly and we were soon off hiking and photographing much of what we saw. We took pictures of animals, nature scenes, family and even remade some scenes from The Breakfast Club.<br />
<br />
After a hot meal over the fire, we settled in for our first night in the tent. As I previously posted, the early morning hours found the tent baptised by a thunderstorm, inside and out.<br />

We went on a hike today to a waterfall and had a good work out going to it! It was about 2.8 miles there and back. It was definitely worth the walk. It's difficult to capture how amazing the view was in pictures but we took a lot anyways. I love the scenery in the smokey mountains!! After the hike, we went up to clingman's dome to see the sunset!! About a mile walk there and back. Nothing beats watching the sunset on top of a mountain. Although we were freezing our hands off, I loved it. All you could see was treetops and mountaintops and the clouds made the rest fade away. It was so peaceful and beautiful. I'm loving the Smokey Mountains!! <br />

After a great morning of beignets and walking around Jackson Square, we hit the road for Alabama. Drive was an easy one and Cinderella drove part of the way, giving me a small break.</div>

We made it to Livingston, Alabama to meet Ms Loehr at the Julia Tutwiler Library at West Alabama University. Ms Loehr was exceptionally helpful and we did find a few things the didn't already have. For example, I now have a more complete listing of the Company G (Alabama 5th Infantry) muster roster from 1863. This really helps fills in some of the gaps we had in our information.<br />

We have some leads as to where the Martin's lived, but don't have a firm grasp of the location. It's somewhere around Intercourse, Alabama. ...Yes, we can count on the giggles each time we say that town's name.</div>

Tomorrow will see us finally camping. No electricity or water. There may be a lapse in posting, but I think I have a solution. Until then, leave us a comment. The kids like looking for comments.</div>

Woke up this morning and made our way down to Café Du Monde. It took some people a little while to figure out what to do with the donuts, but after pictures were taken we enjoyed a belly full of sugar. On with the rest of the day!<br />

We are right on the edge of the French Quarter and took a brief walk (during daylight hours) into the Quarter. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-tg74Q53azd4cihIx91ACp2AQucvdGWEmvvBkkZpBqBnuvNCPLOfN2scmkmk9Fdgp6mztaDIFndi4zaeurzmTON8AZ-o8F09i9FyDrPks3P1lDcDzh-xUXVO-Px6mCsrDiY56UcNo0KEk/s1600/IMG_0944.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-tg74Q53azd4cihIx91ACp2AQucvdGWEmvvBkkZpBqBnuvNCPLOfN2scmkmk9Fdgp6mztaDIFndi4zaeurzmTON8AZ-o8F09i9FyDrPks3P1lDcDzh-xUXVO-Px6mCsrDiY56UcNo0KEk/s320/IMG_0944.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
We went far enough down Bourbon Street to see the architecture, see a street band play and a growing number of early-partiers. The smells and sights soon had a couple of the kids ask to head out and back to the real world. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A street cop suggested dinner at Daisy Dukes, so we had Poboys, Gyros and a burger. The burger was not received well, but the rest was yummy. No Daisy Dukes photos, flags or shorts. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A self-prescribed early night for the crew means an earlier morning for Beignets. After that bit of heaven, we are off to Alabama.</div>

Reflecting back on it today, it's still all pretty true. Figured it has percolated long enough.]</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://myathens.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/7238565977-glide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://myathens.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/7238565977-glide1.jpg" /></a></div>
I've been using this app for over a year <i>[2 years now]</i> and want to reflect on what it is. Glide defines itself as "The fastest way to send + receive private video messages." It is an app on iOS and Android. You record a message to a friend or group of friends and they can watch it almost immediately as you record it. You can watch a whole collection of messages later. You can video or text.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Okay, there is a good overview. What is Glide? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Glide is someone in Florida, Tennessee, Illinois, Maryland, Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas and California sharing life in 45 second* bites. It is these people not getting to see or hear each other in person in years, yet communicating daily about the minutia of life and the pinnacle of experiences with most of the nuances of face to face communication. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Glide is not just hearing the pain in someone's voice, but seeing the honesty in their eyes as they share. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Glide is asking questions that are a pain to type, to a group of knowledgeable friends who can quickly group-discuss problem solutions. </div>
<div>

Glide is a battery-sucking, bandwidth chomping, data plan eviscerating app that many choose to accept, despite it's appetite for techno-resource-gluttony. (Wifi be my friend.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Glide is not being able to sleep at 2am and finding yourself in a conversation with someone else who isn't asleep that same exact time. It's also why we learn to manage the notification's Do Not Disturb settings. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Glide is finding yourself claiming a First in your group. First Glide from a boat. First Glide from a train. First Glide getting pulled over by a cop. First from the bathroom. (..and it gets more creative quickly.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Glide is the internal (and sometimes social) conflict between not wanting to leave 3 consecutive 45 second Glides in the group and really needing at least some of the second consecutive 5 minute Glides after they up'ed the limit. </div>

Twitter, Facebook, texting, and Glide (and Voicemail Kristy!) all serve a purpose in staying connected. Each one is different and there are many other apps out there as well. For now, Glide serves a unique purpose in my online community. Oh, and if you join, tell Sarah Glide I said Hi! </div>

Full training day that was pushing my limitations with some Google add ons, but ended fairly well. Some things didn't work the way they should have and some I flat out messed up. I'll nail it next time.<br />
<br />
I was a little off because dad was meeting with his new nutritionist and I wanted to be there. Dad has come a long way, however, and was willing and successful at taking his iPad to the meeting and recording the conversation. I think he was pretty proud of himself. I'm still working on getting ride services setup, so he caught a cab ride home and was fine the rest of the day.<br />
<br />
My directive from Sister#2 was that when dad moved up, I had to monitor sodium and sugars. I've learned a lot and have kicked sodium in the ass in our meal preps. We have since learned that we've done really good with that, but it's really only super important for his swollen legs and not so much his diabetes.<br />
<br />
We've also done better than we thought with sugars. I have provided very few high starch meals and our processed foods all maintain an extra-low sugar count. The nutritionist shared with dad that we've actually cut back too much. Huh?! <br />

Diabetes resources online leave much to be desired since they all share some common graphics but often have different explanations. I grew up a skinny kid who could consume anything he wanted. I only started watching my diet seriously when I learned I had really high cholesterol after college. It's very controlled now, but I still haven't put much planning into food pyramids, plates or mathematical calculations of carbs/sugars/etc.<br />
<br />
This evening, dad and I stepped into the carb-counting world. We are learning about 15g of carb equals one serving and dad should get 2-6 servings or 30-90g carbs per meal. This was eye-opening. We have actually gone quite a few meals with less than 30g and were told we need to up those. It's surprising what some of the foods were that counted as carbs and what foods he was told didn't count against him.<br />
<br />
We have a ways to go, but we're on the right track. Dad has got to lose weight, keep sodium down and keep his glucose in check and he is seeing it all in a new light now. He's pretty happy with the path he is on. I'm happy I finally am learning some of the diabetic food voodoo. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658639477837303097noreply@blogger.com0
